Nestlé, IBM collaborate on AI-driven packaging innovations
Nestlé's Research and Development division is partnering with IBM Research to explore the potential of artificial intelligence and deep technology in packaging innovations. The collaboration has led to the creation of a generative AI tool designed to identify new high-barrier packaging materials.
The AI tool aims to enhance the protection of food and beverages while reducing the use of virgin plastics. It is also focused on advancing recyclable and paper-based packaging solutions. The development of this AI model involved constructing a comprehensive knowledge base of existing materials and refining a chemical language model. IBM's regression transformer played a crucial role in this process, learning the correlations between molecular structures and their physical-chemical properties.
The model is capable of suggesting new packaging materials that can effectively shield products from environmental factors such as moisture, temperature fluctuations, and oxygen exposure. Nestlé intends to leverage this technology to identify future packaging materials that meet criteria for cost-effectiveness, recyclability, and functionality.
Nestlé's Chief Technology Officer, Stefan Palzer, said: "This novel AI-powered language model, developed in collaboration with IBM Research, illustrates how Nestlé is leading the digital transformation within the food and beverage industry. In the future, such breakthrough technology could be used to optimize the development of more sustainable packaging solutions across product categories."
IBM Research Vice President for Europe & Africa, Alessandro Curioni, said: "We do believe that Generative AI will continue to disrupt scientific discovery, impacting the core business of all knowledge-based industries, allowing critical differentiation and sustainable growth."
In addition to packaging innovations, Nestlé is employing AI and machine learning for various applications, including recipe optimization, manufacturing process enhancements, and personalized nutrition solutions. The company has also announced the establishment of a new R&D centre dedicated to deep technology. This facility will focus on the development of sensors, robotics, AI, and virtual/mixed reality solutions.
