Opera House makes sustainability pledge

The Opera House wants to be a global leader in sustainability and inspire “positive change” in other organisations.

  • The venue has signed up to the UN’s sustainable development goals, 17 measures that include climate action, minimising waste and ending inequality.
  • Measures include equal opportunity, land and sea conservation, responsible consumption, and education on climate action.
  • CEO Louise Herron said being a signatory to the UN goals did not impose external obligations on the Opera House and there was no additional cost: “It doesn’t impose third-party obligations, but it does impose a moral leadership and accountability commitment”

Takeout

While critics of the pledge cry “virtue signaling”, the reality is that businesses and organisations are under increased social and industry pressure to have a sustainability policy and plan.
