WA bans mobile phones in schools

Premier Mark McGowan and Education Minister Sue Ellery announced students at all WA government schools would be banned from using mobile phones from next year.

  • The “off and away all day” policy will apply during school hours, including before school and at break times.
  • Ms Ellery said the ban was about reducing distractions and encouraging kids to talk to each other face to face, instead of texting.
  • A similar ban is taking place in Victoria next year

Stricter policies on mobile phone usage in schools, especially for primary schools, looks set to become the new norm across Australia as the impacts of digital distraction on learning and socialisation for children become apparent.
