Supercars and Griffith University launch 'Supergems' to inspire young women in motorsport and STEM

Supercars and Griffith University have unveiled a new initiative, SuperGEMS, aimed at encouraging young women to explore careers in motorsport and STEM fields. The program specifically targets female students in Year 9 and 10, offering them unique opportunities to engage with the industry.

SuperGEMS is part of Griffith University's broader Science on the GO! initiative. The launch event was held at Griffith University's Southport Campus on the Gold Coast. Notable attendees included PremiAir Racing engineer Romy Mayer, emerging female driver Summer Rintoule, seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner Craig Lowndes, and Brad Jones Racing driver Bryce Fullwood.

The program is designed to provide mentorship opportunities, real-world problem-solving projects, and firsthand experiences in motorsport. More than 50 students are expected to participate in the inaugural run of SuperGEMS.

Supercars COO Tim Watsford described the program as "a significant step forward in promoting diversity and innovation within our sport." He further stated, "The goal of SuperGEMS is to foster the growth of diversity within the industry by providing young women direct access to the sport in new and ambitious ways."

Watsford said, "SuperGEMS students will be able to dissect real-world scenarios in the classroom, lean on the knowledge of Supercars personnel, and get up close with a number of key elements of the sport through our experience days."

Anita Brant, STEM Outreach Manager for the Science on the Go program at Griffith, highlighted the program's educational value. "SuperGEMS is about creating real-world connections between education and industry," she said. Brant added, "By engaging students in hands-on, motorsport-focused STEM activities, we aim to ignite their passion for science and technology while showcasing the exciting career pathways available in motorsport."

Brant also emphasised the program's potential impact on future leaders in STEM and motorsport. "Through the SuperGEMS program, we will be able to provide young women with direct access to the Supercars industry and inspire the next generation of STEM leaders who will drive the future of STEM and Supercars," she stated.

The initiative aligns with the upcoming 2025 Repco Supercars Championship, which will commence with the Thrifty Sydney 500 from February 21-23 at Sydney Motorsport Park.
