CRA reports growth of 12.4 million commercial radio weekly listeners

Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) has reported that commercial radio reached 12.4 million weekly listeners in the last reporting period, marking an increase of 97,000 compared to the previous year.

The data is drawn from the GfK Survey 6, 2025 results. In-car listening continues to dominate the landscape, with an increase of 164,000 listeners year-on-year (YOY), bringing the total to 10.2 million. This segment now accounts for 82% of the total commercial radio audience.

The key advertiser demographic of 25-54-year-olds has also seen growth, with an increase of 99,000 listeners YOY, totalling 6.1 million weekly listeners. Breakfast remains a crucial time slot for commercial radio, reaching 8.7 million listeners, which is an increase of 68,000 from the previous year.

Digital listening continues to rise with 3.5 million Australians streaming commercial radio weekly, reflecting an increase of 22,000 YOY. Streaming audiences during breakfast have grown by 8.8% YOY to 1.4 million, while time spent listening has remained steady across key dayparts.

CRA CEO Lizzie Young said, "Commercial radio has always evolved alongside its audiences and that’s what continues to drive its strength. It’s not just about reach; it’s about relevance, loyalty and connection across daily routines and platforms."

Young added, "As Australia’s only 100% locally owned mass medium, every advertising dollar stays here, supporting local journalism, emergency broadcasting and thousands of jobs. For brands, it’s a powerful combination of scale, trust, community connection and tangible economic impact."
