Myki data misuse could attract $500k fine for Victoria

Public Transport Victoria could be fined for publishing dataset that left the identities of thousands of commuters and their travel patterns discoverable.
  • The release of travel data contained on 15 million myki cards in July last year as part of the Melbourne Datathon.
  • While Public Transport Victoria claimed it had de-identified the data, academics at the University of Melbourne found they could still identify individuals and their travel patterns.

The legal discussion on data privacy is shifting, and marketers need to be aware: “There was an idea that you can release complex, de-identified data like this without an issue,” said information commissioner Sven Bluemmel. “After this issue, I don’t think it can be done in a way that allows you to publish the data.”
