Lilo & Stitch live-action debut drives box office surge in Australia

Lilo & Stitch has achieved the second-largest opening weekend for a film in Australia in 2025, recording 510,000 admissions and generating $9.27 million in earnings from Thursday to Sunday. The film's performance contributed to the second-biggest weekend of total admissions in the country for the year.

It comes after the record-breaking success of the hit videogame adaptation A Minecraft Movie in the previous months.

Lilo & Stitch attracted a significant portion of its audience from the P25-54 demographic, accounting for 62% of admissions. Additionally, 58% of admissions were from the P18-39 demographic, indicating strong appeal among younger viewers.

Managing Director of Val Morgan Cinema, Guy Burbidge, said, "Lilo & Stitch has burst back onto the big screen with a powerful live-action debut, reminding us just how iconic and enduring this Disney classic truly is." He further noted, "Fans didn’t just watch a movie — they revisited a piece of their childhood. For many, it was a chance to share something they grew up with, now through the eyes of their own young families. That’s the power of IP. It taps into deep emotional connections. And when it does, brands have a unique opportunity to ride the wave and become part of the moment."

In comparison, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has accumulated 544,000 admissions to date, maintaining its strong performance in the Australian market. Meanwhile, Final Destination: Bloodlines has achieved 272,000 admissions, performing well particularly among younger audiences.

Looking ahead, the release of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon is anticipated to perform well with family audiences and fans of the franchise. June's release schedule is set to include F1 The Movie, Jurassic World: Rebirth, and Superman, which are expected to attract a diverse range of audience demographics.

Burbidge concluded, "This year is shaping up to be one of the most diverse and exciting yet for audiences. From heartwarming family films to adrenaline-fuelled action and the hair-raising horror that youth audiences crave, there’s truly something for everyone. Across the winter school holidays, F1 The Movie, Jurassic World: Rebirth and Superman will bring high-impact IP to the big screen.

"With beloved characters and passionate fan bases, we know these films have the star power to appeal to everyone, making them prime opportunities for brands to reach diverse audience demographics at scale."
