Mental Health Week aimed at challenging stigma

This year’s theme is, “Mental health starts where we live, work and play.”

  • It’s estimated that as many as half of all Australians will experience mental health issues over the course of their lifetime, at a cost of $28.6 billion to the community.
  • Only 50 per cent of people struggling with mental health get treatment.
  • October 10 is World Mental Health Day, a global event aimed at raising awareness of mental health issues.

Takeout

Mental health has been an issue of increased focus in the last few years as the wider social impacts of mental illness are felt. Governments, organisations and brands are increasingly getting involved with initiatives as the topic becomes less taboo, providing opportunities for companies to show support for a relatively apolitical issue (in contrast to sustainability, LGBTIQ+ rights etc.)
