IMAX, HOYTS Cinemas to launch up to five new locations in Australian expansion
IMAX Corporation and HOYTS Cinemas have agreed to a renewed partnership to install up to five IMAX with Laser systems across Australia. This agreement marks the first collaboration between the two companies since 2019, with the initial IMAX location to open in Melbourne in 2025, coinciding with the release of the film 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'.
The partnership aims to expand IMAX's presence in Australia, with plans for up to four additional locations. IMAX has seen significant growth in the Australian market, increasing from one location in 2022 to four currently, with ten more planned in the coming years. Australia ranks as the tenth largest market for IMAX box office globally, boasting a high per-screen-average of nearly $4.5 million.
CEO and President of HOYTS Group, Damien Keogh, said: "As the pioneer of IMAX screens in multiplex cinema in Australia, HOYTS is delighted to partner with IMAX again. Our foundation site at Melbourne Central will be open for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ with more sites to be announced shortly."
IMAX's market share in Australia has grown from 2.6% of the overall box office in 2024 to 4.4% in 2025. The new HOYTS IMAX locations will feature IMAX with Laser technology, which offers advanced cinema experiences with 4K images and precision audio.
CEO of IMAX, Rich Gelfond, said: "Australia continues to be a priority for IMAX, and this agreement with HOYTS Cinemas to expand and diversify our footprint is just the latest sign of our strong momentum in this thriving moviegoing market."
