Professor Wesley Enoch AM has been appointed as Chair of the Australia Council Board of Creative Australia for a four-year term by the Australian Government. He is the first practising artist and the first First Nations person to be appointed as Chair of the Australia Council Board.
The Australia Council Board serves as the principal arts investment and advisory body for the Government, promoting creativity for the benefit of all Australians. Enoch has been serving as Deputy Chair since August 2023 and as Acting Chair since May, following the retirement of Robert Morgan.
Enoch is a Quandamooka man from Minjerribah and is internationally recognised as a playwright and artistic director. His notable works include 'The 7 Stages of Grieving', 'Black Medea', and 'The Story of The Miracles at Cookie's Table'. Since 2021, he has been Professor of Indigenous Practice, Creative Industries at Queensland University of Technology. His previous roles include Artistic Director of the Sydney Festival from 2017 to 2020, as well as Artistic Director at Kooemba Jdarra Indigenous Performing Arts and the Ilbijerri Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Theatre Co-operative.
Minister for the Arts, Tony Burke, stated, "Wesley has been instrumental during the transformation of Creative Australia and delivering on Creative Australia's commitments under the National Cultural Policy - Revive. His wealth of experience as an industry leader and his knowledge of Australia's creative sector will provide the Board with valuable leadership."
Burke also expressed gratitude to the former Chair, saying, "I'd also like to again thank Robert for his years of service to the Board and dedication to championing the arts."
