Nine scoops up Optus Sport assets for $20 million
Nine has entered into an agreement for its sports streaming platform Stan to acquire Optus Sport's media rights agreements, subscriber agreements, and social media assets in a transaction set to take effect from 1 August.
Stan will make an upfront payment of $20 million to Optus Sport and will also contribute towards the initial payment for the next Premier League rights cycle. Optus is expected to provide periodic contributions to Nine until 2028.
Nine anticipates that the acquisition will be EBITDA and cash positive for Stan over the duration of the media rights agreements. The assets acquired include media rights agreements for the Premier League and the Emirates FA Cup, both extending through to the end of the 2027/2028 seasons.
Currently, more than half of Optus Sport's subscribers are not subscribed to Stan. However, Optus Sport subscribers will continue to have access to Premier League and Emirates FA Cup content via Stan Sport. Optus telecommunications customers who do not currently subscribe to Stan will generally be able to access Optus Sports content at their existing monthly subscription rates for the upcoming season.
The acquisition will bolster Stan Sport’s existing portfolio of sports content, which already includes UEFA club competitions, Rugby, Tennis, Motorsport, and Combat Sports. The announcement was authorised for lodgement by the Managing Director.
