Canva integrates with ChatGPT to enhance design workflow

Canva has become the first design platform to be natively integrated into OpenAI's ChatGPT, via a 'deep research connector' that allows Canva users to link their designs directly to the AI platform's model, enabling context-rich responses.

In addition to the integration, Canva has launched the Canva Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server. This server permits AI assistants to access a user's complete Canva workspace, facilitating the generation of designs, iteration, drafting of design copy, and resizing of assets within a chat interface.

The integration with ChatGPT and the MCP Server is now available to Canva's 240 million users, which notably includes 95% of Fortune 500 companies. Canva has reported a 375% year-over-year increase in usage for Canva GPT, positioning it as one of ChatGPT's top productivity applications.

The integration is designed to streamline workflows, allowing users to brainstorm, design, and publish without leaving their AI assistant. Privacy and security are highlighted as key features, with interactions protected by Canva Shield, the company's AI trust and safety framework.

The Canva deep research connector is aimed at enhancing productivity for marketers, business owners, sales teams, and educators by providing context-rich insights. The MCP Server enables AI assistants to generate any design type, autofill charts, resize and export templates, and import files directly from a link.

Canva's AI strategy is described as a flexible, multi-model approach, incorporating proprietary models, partner models, and a robust apps ecosystem. The company, launched in 2013, serves users in over 190 countries, offering tools for visual communication and collaboration.

GM and Head of Ecosystem at Canva, Anwar Haneef, said: "AI agents and assistants have become indispensable creative partners, yet current workflows require users to manually add context or references, creating complexity. We’re embedding Canva directly into the AI tools people use every day so they can brainstorm, create, and publish content faster. This is a major step in our vision to make the complex simple and build an all-in-one AI workflow that’s secure and accessible to all."

Head of Business Products at OpenAI, Nate Gonzalez, said: "Launching the Canva deep research connector means businesses and their employees get faster, better insights because ChatGPT has more context. We’re thrilled to work together to bring powerful AI to many of today’s most important workflows."
