Amazon Ad Sales hit $17.2bn for Q4 2024, but miss estimates

Amazon has reported a robust financial performance for the fourth quarter of 2024, with significant growth across its various business segments. The company's advertising sales increased by 18% year-on-year, reaching US$17.288 billion. Subscriber services revenue also saw a rise, up 10% year-on-year to $11.508 billion.

Online store sales reached $75.556 billion, marking an 8% increase compared to the same period last year. Third-party seller services sales grew by 9% to $47.485 billion. Overall, Amazon's net sales increased by 10% to $187.8 billion in Q4 2024, compared to $170.0 billion in Q4 2023. Excluding a $0.9 billion unfavourable impact from foreign exchange rates, net sales increased by 11% compared to the previous year.

The North America segment saw a 10% year-over-year increase in sales, totalling $115.6 billion. International segment sales rose by 8% to $43.4 billion, or 9% when excluding foreign exchange rate changes. Amazon Web Services (AWS) segment sales increased by 19% year-over-year, reaching $28.8 billion in Q4 2024.

Operating income for the quarter rose to $21.2 billion, compared to $13.2 billion in Q4 2023. Net income increased to $20.0 billion, or $1.86 per diluted share, up from $10.6 billion, or $1.00 per diluted share, in the same quarter of the previous year.

For the full year 2024, Amazon's net sales increased by 11% to $638.0 billion, compared to $574.8 billion in 2023. AWS segment sales for the year rose by 19% to $107.6 billion. Operating income for the full year increased to $68.6 billion, compared to $36.9 billion in 2023. Net income for the year was $59.2 billion, or $5.53 per diluted share, compared to $30.4 billion, or $2.90 per diluted share, in 2023.

Operating cash flow increased by 36% to $115.9 billion for the trailing twelve months, compared to $84.9 billion for the same period ending December 31, 2023. Free cash flow also saw an increase, reaching $38.2 billion, up from $36.8 billion for the trailing twelve months ended December 31, 2023.

Amazon delivered at its fastest speeds ever for Prime members in 2024, with over 65% more items delivered to U.S. Prime members the same day or overnight than in Q4 2023. The company held a record-breaking Black Friday Week and Cyber Monday deal event, described as the largest ever for independent sellers in Amazon’s store.

Amazon was named the lowest-priced U.S. retailer by Profitero for the eighth consecutive year, with online prices averaging 14% less than other major U.S. retailers. The company launched Amazon Haul, a new shopping experience in its U.S. shopping app and mobile site, offering ultra-low prices.

Amazon's film 'Red One' attracted 50 million worldwide viewers in its first four days, marking it as Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched film debut on Prime Video. The third season of 'Thursday Night Football' on Prime Video averaged 13.2 million viewers, an 11% increase over 2023, with a peak of 24.7 million during the Wild Card playoff game.

The company experienced its biggest Q4 for Kindle device sales in over a decade, with a new lineup driving a 30% year-over-year increase in devices sold. Amazon held its 13th AWS re:Invent with over 55,000 in-person attendees and 1.8 million livestream viewers.

Amazon announced new AWS capabilities, including Amazon Nova, Trainium2 AI chips, and Project Rainier. The company signed new AWS agreements with several major companies, including the U.S. Army, Intuit, and PayPal. Additionally, Amazon launched AWS Asia Pacific (Thailand) and AWS Mexico (Central) Regions.

Amazon supported California wildfire relief efforts with over 500,000 essential items delivered and $10 million in donations. The company was ranked No. 3 on Fortune magazine’s World’s Most Admired Companies list and was named the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy by Bloomberg NEF for the fifth straight year.

"The holiday shopping season was the most successful yet for Amazon and we appreciate the support of our customers, selling partners, and employees who helped make it so," said Andy Jassy, President and CEO of Amazon. "When we look back on this quarter several years from now, I suspect what we’ll most remember is the remarkable innovation delivered across all of our businesses, none more so than in AWS where we introduced our new Trainium2 AI chip, our own foundation models in Amazon Nova, a plethora of new models and features in Amazon Bedrock that give customers flexibility and cost savings, liberating transformations in Amazon Q to migrate from old platforms, and the next edition of Amazon SageMaker to pull data, analytics, and AI together more concertedly," Jassy stated.
