Shein unveils first Australian student-designed collection with RMIT's Elian Yang

Shein has launched its inaugural Australian student-designed collection, crafted by the winner of the ultra fast-fashion brand's R.I.S.E Student Designer Challenge.

RMIT student Elian Yang emerged as the 2024 competition's winner with a collection inspired by Retro-Futurism. The collection, which merges elements of Greek mythology with contemporary aesthetics, will be marketed and sold globally through the Shein X Designer Incubator Program.

"This opportunity feels surreal. As a student about to graduate, having my designs showcased on such a global platform is beyond anything I imagined. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that people all over the world can experience and wear my creations," said Yang. "This collection is a blend of the past and the future, inspired by my fascination with Greek mythology and the challenge of merging ancient aesthetics with modern, futuristic design."

Yang received a $10,000 cash prize and mentorship from Australian designer Alice McCall as part of her win. The SHEIN R.I.S.E. Challenge attracted 154 student registrations, with 20 advancing to the public voting stage. "I am so truly grateful for this chance to share my work, connect with a global audience, and be part of something much bigger than myself," Yang said.

Since its inception in 2021, the Shein X program has collaborated with over 5,300 designers worldwide, with a commitment of US$105 million to support emerging talent through 2028.

A SHEIN spokesperson said: "With the launch of our first R.I.S.E Student Designer Challenge, an initiative that will be annual, we had a strong focus on finding and supporting talented young Australian designers..."Ultimately we want to see these young individuals achieve a brighter future."
