Databricks eyes ANZ expansion as demand for AI and data intelligence grows

Databricks is on track to grow its regional Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) team to over 200 employees by the end of the year, in light of increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and data intelligence solutions.

The expansion, which will focus on enhancing the company's field engineering team, follows the acquisition of a suite of new customers in ANZ, including Airwallex, Austroads, Children's Cancer Institute, and Zip Co. In addition to customer growth, Databricks has expanded its local partner network to more than 200 partners.

Databricks has also partnered with the Queensland and New South Wales (NSW) governments to launch Data and AI Academy programs. These initiatives aim to upskill over 100 staff in each government on data analytics and AI, reflecting the company's commitment to fostering data intelligence capabilities in the public sector.

Vice President and Country Manager for Databricks in ANZ, Adam Beavis, said: "I’m constantly amazed by the strong ecosystem of customers and partners in ANZ, who are investing in data intelligence and impactful AI use cases that drive innovation in this region," he said. "There’s no doubt there was a learning curve with data intelligence when AI burst into the scene, but we’re now seeing a real maturity from ANZ organisations where they are bringing to market AI projects and innovations that are globally best in class."

Globally, Databricks has formed partnerships with major companies such as SAP, Palantir, and Anthropic. The company recently announced US$15 billion in financing, with a valuation of US$62 billion, underscoring its strong financial position.

Databricks is experiencing global growth at a rate of 60% year on year, with a revenue run-rate exceeding US$3 billion as of January 31, 2025. Recent acquisitions by the company include BladeBridge and Tabular, further enhancing its capabilities in the data intelligence space.

The Sydney Data Intelligence Day event was part of Databricks' ANZ event roadshow, which commenced in Melbourne on March 19. This event series highlights the company's engagement with the local market and its efforts to showcase its data intelligence solutions.

VP of Data and AI at Airwallex, Timothy Wong, said: "We are set to adopt Databricks as the foundation for our data and AI workload, from customer-facing dashboards and internal self-serve analytics using AI within the company. We anticipate that AI, when used the right way, will be a game changer for modern businesses. As Airwallex continues to scale globally, we will continue to explore data and AI capabilities to make our product more intuitive and deliver greater value for our customers."
