CommBank and Football Australia forge historic six-year partnership including Matildas, Socceroos naming rights
Commonwealth Bank and Football Australia have announced a landmark six-year partnership, a deal which sees the bank not only extend its Matildas, ParaMatildas and Pararoos naming rights sponsorships, but also gain naming rights for the iconic Socceroos team.
At six years and across all aspects of the sport, it's the largest and longest-ever partnership Football Australia has done outside of its apparel partnership with Nike. The deal equally sees CommBank become the largest corporate supporter of football in Australia's history and will see its support stretch for a decade. The pair have not disclosed the partnership's total value, but it's unsurprising in the multiples of millions. Unverified estimates for the original deal suggested the partnership was worth upwards of $2m a year.
As well as supporting the elite teams, the partnership aims to bolster youth development and create pathways for future national players through support for the Emerging Matildas and Emerging Socceroos Championships. CommBank's Growing Football Fund has already facilitated over 230 grants to grassroots clubs across Australia, reflecting its commitment to nurturing the sport from the ground up. CommBank will also serve as the official banking partner of Football Australia, holding naming rights for various national teams and championships, including the U23 Matildas, Young Matildas, Junior Matildas, Olyroos, Young Socceroos, and Joeys.
It's been four years since CommBank first struck its naming rights partnerships with FA. The pair said the latest six-year collaboration builds on a 27% increase in participation in girls' and women's football since 2021, alongside a 100 per cent rise in match attendances for the CommBank Matildas, including 17 sold-out matches from 2023 to 2024.
The partnership is set to commence on 1 September 2025.
"With the Socceroos facing the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, and the CommBank Matildas preparing for the Australian-hosted AFC Women’s Asia Cup, there has never been a more exciting time to be a fan of football in Australia," said CommBank CEO Matt Comyn.
"When we partnered with Football Australia as naming rights sponsors of the CommBank Matildas, they were about to embark on a history making international campaign, and what an incredible amount they’ve achieved for Australian football and women’s sport since 2021."
Comyn also highlighted the long-term nature of the collaboration: "This six-year extension, combined with our previous four years, will result in a 10-year partnership. We hope this long-term commitment will help drive positive and lasting change for the game, players and communities."
Interim CEO of Football Australia, Heather Garriock, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership's potential to drive a joint purpose of creating a game that is accessible to and loved by all Australians. More than 2 million people play football in Australia making it the most participated in team sport in the country.
"CommBank have been incredible partners since 2021 – in the four years since, we have together taken the women’s and para games from strength to strength, and we cannot wait to extend this success into other programs," she said.
At a media event this morning announcing the deal, both Comyn and Garriock also stressed the importance of the longevity of the partnership. "That was important to us - to be committed to the long term," Comyn said.
"This is so much more than a sponsorship agreement, it is a values-aligned business partnership through which we will innovate and support each other in many ways – with a core aim of improving the lives of Australians through the world game right across the country," Garriock added. "To have a partner supporting us from the start, especially when the supporting the Matildas wasn't cool - now Matildas are the number one brand in the country. To have a partner... from grassroots to professional sports is just incredible. Football is for all, it's the world game and we're on the world stage."
CommBank's commitment to inclusivity and community engagement in the last four years through CommBank's Growing Football Fund has seen over 230 grassroots clubs and associations have received grants of up to $5000.
"CommBank is proud to play our part in extending the incredible growth we’ve seen in the female game over the past few years into all facets of the game, including the men’s, para athletes and youth competitions – we are committed to promoting supporting inclusivity, keeping communities connected, and ensuring a brighter future for all," Comyn said.
CommBank takes over naming rights sponsorship for the Socceroos from Subway, who has been a partner for the last three years. In announcing the conclusion of the partnership, a joint decision, both said their organisations are entering strategic new phases.
“Subway has been a fantastic partner to work with, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved together,” said Garriock. “Their support has helped us elevate the Socceroos brand, enhance our national teams programmes on and off the field, and elevate the sport to new heights.”
Shane Bracken, Managing Director for Subway Australia and New Zealand added: “We’re incredibly proud of the impact our sponsorship with Football Australia has had. Supporting grassroots to elite levels of the game has been a privilege, and we’re honoured to have been part of so many memorable milestones.”
